Well, I won’t lie. I’m very glad that tonight is the final night of the 35 Daze of Beto. Who’s crazy idea was that anyway?!
But it was fun – and inspiring. To take a bunch of musicians – top flight, busy and somewhat jaded – and drag them through 35 consecutive gigs was a task no less frustrating than Austin traffic. However, to see the twinkle come into Robert’s eye when fans expressed their thanks and to see the posture shifts and true inspiration blow through the horns after watching the band’s 1979 ACL taping, were just a few of the moments that made it all worthwhile.
Some might consider this whole exercise as beating a dead horse. They didn’t make any of the gigs. Even the players may have had to drag themselves to the stages but there’s no denying that once the music started the reason why it still goes on became very apparent. Robert Skiles writes joyful music. We all need some joy in our lives these days.
Hope to see everyone there tonight. We will be serving up a feast of joy. Enough for everyone to take some home.
