Fable Records is one of the oldest independent record labels in the state of Texas. Beginning in 1973 and into 1979 Mike Mordecai and small  team of enthusiastic young innovators put out a series of vinyl 45s of local Austin groups like Zeus, Rick Sheffield and Zilker Sunday – Mike’s rock/jazz fusion band with John Mills.   In 1975 they made a bold move to put out 3 albums in one month with three hot local bands Steam Heat, 47 Times Its on Weight and Starcrost – Mills and Mordecai’s new project. Fable Records manufactured 1000 copies of each.  This Trilogy, hailed by Billboard Magazine as the turning point for contemporary jazz in Austin, put Fable Records and Austin’s Jazz/rock/funk scene on the national radar.  Today the trilogy continues to be a coveted find by vinyl collectors across the globe.

Fable Records continues to bring to the table some of the finest music Texas has to offer.  Our family of musicians are some of the finest players on the planet.

FABLE’S “DAGONET”, in Texas pronounced (dauh-gon-it) – this little character, whose namesake was King Arthur’s court jester, was created as the original Fable Records logo but was only used on the label of Zilker Sunday’s vinyl 45 in 1973.  Many years later it was retrieved via scan of the 45 itself and re-rendered by Laura Mordecai. © Fable Records 2012
